395 My 2013 Daily Planner!

This year I decided to stick with regular Jen fashion and create my own daily planner vs. scouring online shops and stores until I found the one that fits my daily needs perfectly. 

I have tried all sorts of different planners and I often switch things up from year to year since our needs are always changing.  Last year, I decided to go the digital route, but I found that I was less organized than usual with our daily schedules and planning.  I would go into the calendar to input dates, but it wasn't my cup of tea when it came time to do my weekly planning and look at my Day at a Glance.

What can I say, I simply like to write things down, carry my planner, and be able to open it up and jot goals and notes and meal plans all on one happy and colorful place. 

So, I created a 2013 planner pages printable, which you can find in my Etsy shop here.

The pages can be printed {I have them set up to easily print front/back duplex style}, and used within a binder, professional bound {like I did with my blog planner}, or used with the Discbound system from Staples, which is what I ultimately went with.

As I mentioned, I decided to ultimately go with the Discbound system {found at Staples}.  You all actually introduced it to me and thought it would be something that would tickle my fancy, and boy have I been smitten since!  So THANK YOU!  I love that I can easily mix and match items to insert, reuse everything from year to year and just swap out pages that need updating, and basically customize it to fit my personal needs!  LOVE doesn't begin to describe it.  New baseball schedule?  Just punch it and pop it in!  Mess up a page?  Just reprint and pop it in!  Special notes and reminders?  Punch and pop.  Fantastic.  And I also adore that it makes it smaller than the typical binder. 


Inside the cover makes me grin ear to ear every time I open it!


On the left, I have color coded stickers, a sticky note pad for quick note jotting, calendar stickers, page tabs and some of my business cards.


And on the right is my coversheet, which I laminated like a pro....


Inside, there is a clear pocket to hold things such as important notes, birthday cards, invites, etc... along with our Special Dates printable.


I used sticky tabs combined with my label maker to divide each month.


And decided I would try the color coding method, so each family gets a special color inside.



Behind the monthly calendar, is where the magic really happens.  I printed everything two sided to save paper and for ease of use.  So, the next pages are a side by side view of the entire week:


Each week is pre-labeled with the specific dates.


And since we are big meal planners, I wanted to jot down the meals for the week inside each day.


On the other side, I included a spot to set some goals/to dos for the week.


And in the back, I printed off a bunch of blank note pages since I am always thinking up things that need a place to live.


Oooh la la lovely right?  Keeping a family of five on the same page can be a challenge, so here is hoping this planner will act as our glue this year.  And all of the colors keep me excited to clutch it day after day!

Updated Planner FAQ's:
  • The paper I printed on is standard letter size, 8 1/2" x 11.  98 bright & 32 lb from Staples.
  • When printing, be sure to print a few test pages ahead of time to be sure to understand your printer setup.  Unfortunately, every printer is different and has different settings and options.  What worked best for ours was to select "double sided printing" and to be sure that the "Auto Rotate Pages" box was selected since some are portrait and others are landscape.  Our printer settings allows us to print different page sizes, but it requires us to feed the paper of that size in manually.  
  • The pages are designed to be printed on standard letter 8.5" x 11" paper.  The files are in PDF format which open best with Adobe Reader which can be downloaded for free here.
  • Here is the link to the binder cover I purchased {I removed the sheets from the inside and replaced with my own}.
  • Here is the link to the discbound paper punch I purchased and used {yes, it is compatible with both the Martha Stewart discbound system and the Staples Arc system}.  A reader mentioned that a less expensive option that also worked for her was this Levenger punch.

  • I use Papermate Flair Porous Ultra Fine Point pens and I love them.  Great writing and no bleeding.  
  •  Since I plan on reusing the cover year after year, the title was added with vinyl I cut with my Silhouette {the vinyl can be removed}.
  • The planner is 129 pages of prefilled dates/calendars.  Plus a Special Dates, Notes & Meal Planning doc.  I printed double sided so I used half that in paper.
  • Staples does offer a printing service and binding service {or you can print at home and just have staples bind it for you}.  You would have to contact your local Staples to confirm their services as they may vary from store to store.

  • In the front cover, the stickers slide into the pouch and the notepad was originally stuck there, but didn't stay so I may try a command strip to hold it better.

      I print my pages at home {for these specifically since they are double sided I just use a heavier weighted paper}. I have an HP Laser printer that I love, but I also use it frequently for blog things.

  6. Okay, silly question - but did you buy a special punch to prep all your pages? I'd love to get the large version of this to house my household binder materials I bought from you a few weeks ago... but I can't find out how to punch my own pages and insert them in the Discbound! :)

    2. I started trying to use these notebooks when they first launched them but found I was limited by their forms...I had no idea you could buy a punch now to put your own pages in! I don't like it for my planner but I do like them for project notebooks so I'll be checking this out, thanks! Oh, and the pages are beautiful as always...it's great seeing a few more vertical pages, I don't like working with the horizontal layouts.

    3. I also created a planner a few years and sell them on my website at www.wellkeptlife.com. It is spiral bound so you can't really take pages out or add others but you might want to take a look. The weekly pages begin on Monday.

      I always shoot in natural light and use a tripod. Then, I use an editing program to adjust lighting when necessary as well.

  15. OMG! I was talking to my friend last night and mentioned your blog. showing her my home binder and wishing that you made a planner - you answered my prayers! It looks as if you have the planner printed for a 8x11 1/2 binder and you mentioned that the pages are in PDFs so you can change the size. I have been looking for a planner that will give me a two page calendar in a 5x7 or 9x7 binder - would your pages allow me to have a 2 page calendar? I sure hope so!

      The size should be able to be changed based on your printer settings, in mine, I can pick the paper size and scale to print accordingly.

      The monthly calendar is designed to fit onto one page, the weekly/daily planner pages fit on two.

  16. Have you ever considered selling them assembled? I would LOVE to have one but it would probably take me forever to assemble and I, and likely others, would be willing to pay for it completely assembled. Just a thought.

    1. I would too considering this is going to cost a fortune (for a planner) to have printed. You can print it on a basic printer, but it won't look the same. Then add in binding. I bet that you'd spend over $40 on this!

      First, I thought assembly would be super time consuming, but it was surprisingly quick. The most time consuming portion was creating the labeled tabs, however, they do sell tabs that could potentially make that easier/faster. {like this: http://www.shoplet.com/Cardinal-OneStep-Monthly-Index-System/CRD60318CB/spdv?ci_src=17588969&ci_sku=CRD60318CB}


      I could possibly sell the planner printed with a laminated cover/back and spiral bound, however I am not located close enough to a Staples to purchase bulk supplies of accessories. I will absolutely consider ways to do this in the future though. :)

  17. I have the large arc planner and the smaller arc planner. I decided to use to the larger one for everything since I had more space to write. Plus I have so much going on between school, family, and life. LOL Have a wonderful 2013!

    1. I printed it at home, I just used a heavier weighted professional paper to avoid bleeding through since I printed front to back.

      I set up the calendar/planner pages for duplex {front & back printing}, so it should be as easy as changing that setting on your printer.

      The supplies were purchased from Staples and everything was assembled by me.

    That discbound system looks interesting! Do you think the punch and a notebook could be used to create a greeting card book (similar to this one: http://www.examiner.com/article/how-to-make-a-greeting-card-mini-book)?

    I'm trying to find a way to save/bind all the cards my daughter is receiving in her first year as a keepsake for her later. I'd love to have a more sturdy binding like the one here if it would work!

    Also, could you do a post on how you use your daily planner in coordination with your home binder to stay on top of things...I am an organizing reject but love living vicariously through your beautiful designs and organizational skills:)

      The size could potentially fit in a larger purse {I carry a small clutch along with a tote that it fits inside of}.

      As far as the binder/planner goes, I tried to make some tweaks to use the planner daily and take with me and the binder for special events, checklists and more of a reference I can pull from as needed, while keeping it at home only.

  40. Same as you I have always used color coding for my sons and also a sign. A square for Hugo, a circle for Giraud and a triangle for Leonard, so easy to figure out! I love color coding. Thank you for the inspiration and Happy New Year!

      Yes, that is the binder cover I used.

      I applied the year to the front by cutting out some vinyl with my Silhouette, that way, I can change it from year to year since the vinyl is removable.

      I have been trying to decide how to combine the large calendar with the daily pages to reduce redundancies, but for now, I am writing most things in both since I like to be able to quickly glance at the monthly calendar and write in more details on the daily pages.

  47. Hi Jen! New reader here, and I just have to tell you how absolutely giddy this post made me! As in squealing with delight giddy! I am a total pen and paper kind of girl, and your planner is beautiful and functional...perfect! I rely on color coding as well, for towels, linens...you name it. On the family calendar, each child gets his/her own colored pen for scheduled things- that has worked really well for me.

  49. Waaaaaaahhhhhh! Needed this a month ago, before I spent all my money and ink on another one. I like what I got because it helps me with the keeping up with the housework junk that I abhors, but I like the style of yours and that disc bound I have never seen or heard of.   52. I realize that you have to make a living too, but I just feel like you don't offer your readers anything in return besides advice. Everything that we can "win" you already got for free or hugely discounted. Not to mention you make money if we buy anything through the links on your site. All I saw you do this year was offer a couple free printables, 3 free binder kits, and a 20% off discount. That just doesn't seem like much to me when we're one of the reasons you are doing so well. Don't get me wrong, I don't feel like you owe me anything personally. I just think that it's tacky that you always post these things for your readers, tell them to go buy it, and then don't offer anything in return that doesn't make you money. Perhaps you could do more giveaways to show your appreciation since your readers are your main source of income? Rant over.

She has an AMAZING talent -- and owes us nothing...she is creating amazing products and giving us the option of purchasing, there is no doubt she puts in hours and hours of work, why should she give it all away? And she is giving us a lot of advice, tips, and eye candy-- this is just a bonus.

I never want this blog to feel "pushy" to purchase anything, ever. And I seriously wish that I could give everything away for free, but unfortunately, the time commitment away from my family it takes to create the larger kits is my income and how I provide for them. People absolutely have the choice to purchase or not, I am just sharing the planner I am going with as I get asked frequently. Whether I purchased one from a store or made my own, I am going to share it with the readers.

I do not feel you push merchandise, but rather offer solutions for us to use or make our own to suite our individual lives.     6. I want to add some insight into this, because the poster with an attitude doesn't seem to get that time=money. I would like to elucidate this connection in hopes that it defends the awesome work that Jen does!

      I purchased Jen's household binder (which I LOVE, btw). In my etsy message to her, I asked whether she would consider a personally commissioned baby tracker, since I have several disorganized friends having babies. She immediately wrote back in a cheerful way that she doesn't have the capacity to do that at the moment and that it's on her to-do list for 2013.

      After reading the website and seeing her say that she made the printables via excel, I decided to give it a try on my own. I've now developed an adorable template for a baby tracker (that I hope to submit to you, Jen, so you can see it!)to give as a gift to friends. If I could've waited for Jen to create one, I would have...but pregnancy has a very strict timeline :)

      That printable book took me DAYS to develop and format. DAYS. If I were charging 10$ an hour, (I'm a Ph.D. candidate and my consulting time is easily worth 25$ per hour), this thing would easily be 200.00, if not more. There's alot of blood, sweat, and tears that go into those things. Jen's shop takes the guesswork out of it, BUT if you look around on her site she actually teaches you how to make the printables yourself--if you're willing to put the time in there.

      So the moral of the story is that Jen is giving you the best of both worlds. The convenience if you value time and the TOOLS if you value money. If she were only trying to "make a buck" she wouldn't be "teaching you how to fish," she would only be selling you the fish!

      Your blog has changed my life for the better--I'm now passionate about organizing my life because you have shown that it can be beautiful and FUN.

    7. I have to agree with you, Emily. I am an editor and am skilled at putting these types of documents together. It takes A LOT of time. I considered creating one of my own instead, but I just don't have the time or energy to put into developing all of the details and design elements. Jen's fits my needs perfectly!

      It should be quite simple. I would send each document over is separate PDF files that you could print endlessly:
      * Coversheet
      * Special Dates page
      * Monthly Calendar & Daily Planner pages, set up to be printed from & back {duplex printing}
      * Notes page
      * Weekly Meal Planning page which you could either add to your planner or print & use weekly {I keep a stack in my pantry}

      I also thought assembly would be super time consuming, but it was surprisingly quick.       The monthly calendar/planner pages are 129 pages, plus the cover, the special dates and any notes pages. The pages are designed for front & back printing, so it would be half that.

I have always debated about just doing the electronic method of organizing my calendar and to-do lists, but wanting the ease of just having a phone to carry around that info at all times instead of also carrying a planner.   76. Oh, this is wonderful. I've bookmarked it and have also checked and we do have the supplies, including puncher, from Staples in UK. I do loads of note-making and writing drafts and also little sketches in pads and was wanting to try to keep them in one pad (or maybe one for home/work and one for out and about) this year, but have struggled to find something that gives me what I really want. So, I think will definitely go for a completely tailor-made version using these binders. I'll probably have a calendar section and some specific weekly to dos and then lots of double-sided blank pages - lined on one side and blank on the other, which is what I prefer. Wish our colour laser printer still worked, though, as inkjet is not waterproof. I might look into getting a friend to print black and white pages and then I could pretty them up by hand!

    Thank you for this brilliant idea and sharing it. I am in awe of your organisational skills and ideas!

  82. Thank you! I have my order in! My hubby resisted because he thought I was crazy for spending the money...thought I could do something similar. I said maybe I could but it would be this CUTE - and CUTE is SO important! Told him he can spend his time trying to make one for next year, but it better be CUTE - I doubt that happens!

    This is EXACTLY what I needed to go with the House and Daycare Binders! I looked into the disk system (so cute) but opted to stick with regular binders because I need some folders and other bulky items added.

    Question to anyone who has used the disk system - I think it would be fun to do a smaller purse size planner - wondering how the disks hold up when being thrown into a purse and bag - to they stay put?

    Long time fan here. I want you to know that it really makes my day to steal away a few minutes at my desk at work to catch up on a new blog post--especially one about planners because I love pens, papers, and organization!!
    That said, I have always like the discbound organizers from other expensive paper companies, but was hesitant because of the price. I see Staples now sells the discs, but do they also sell the paper punch? Do you ever have papers fall out?

I am a organizer/day planner junkie and have often found myself buying a new one in the middle of the year because i think it will work better... Last month I bought 2 of them just in a smaller and bigger size. One for home and one for the purse.
    I wish I had seen yours first though. For sure next year I want to get yours.
    I also color coordinate things in my planner, but I usually just use a highlighter.
    I do have a question though about your pens. What kind are they and where did you get them?

  101. Perfect timing! I bought Erin Condren's planner last year, and really liked it, but did not use it as much as I should have. This year I was going to buy it again but was having a hard time biting the $50 bullet. I even spent quite a bit of time searching etsy for a replacement, binded or printable and haven't found anything. I already have the household binder, so I was so happy to open my email this morning and find this sitting there! Just ordered mine this morning! Thanks again!

  105. LOVE that you included the meal plan right on the days. And the color! (I've been following you for a fairly long time, and all that color.....time consuming!) I'm considering a silhouette to incorporate some new systems....but for now I think this GORGEUS layout in a regular binder will be just fine. (I don't have any of the doodads you've mentioned. And won't have time to shop for a bit....although thank you for the reason to go to Staples again. ;) )

    Question: when you say more professional paper-do you get yours someplace like Staples? I generally just grab some at Target (we homeschool-go thru A LOT of paper....) but they seem to only have regular lightweight paper and card stock. I can't imagine this is what you mean.

  116. Another really nice aspect to printing the pages instead of buying a pre-assembled book is that you don't have to carry the ENTIRE year at the same time. Since I like to keep my planner with me, I could print out all the months and only the weekly pages for the current season. This will save space, weight, and let me enjoy it all over again every few months! This is a nice way to still maintain freedom of creativity.
